Massachusetts Food Waste Disposal Ban
High Rise Facilities

As of October 1, 2014, Massachusetts enacted a statewide commercial food waste disposal ban designed to divert food waste to energy-generating and composting facilities and reduce the state's waste stream. Large hotels are estimated to be among the 1700 facilities that will be impacted by the ban. However, diverting food waste for composting can result in significant savings for a hotel's trash disposal costs.

“This commercial food waste ban is just one more way Massachusetts continues to lead the way with solutions that not only save on energy and protect our environment, but also green up the bottom line,” says Sen. Marc R. Pacheco, senate chair of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture.

Massachusetts is just one of several states that have banned landfill disposal of food waste from large commercial food waste generators.

Q. How can I track my recycling progress with Bulk Pickups?

A. Online recycling reports allow anyone who has utilized bulk pickup recycling services to receive detailed information about their facility's recycling progress. Each report details specifically what types of waste were recycled, the amount recycled, and the date processed. These reports are available online 24/7 and are perfect for facility management reviews, “green” marketing initiatives, and more.
