NOTICE OF CHANGES TO K-12 SCHOOL
GRANT PROGRAM
$27 Million Awarded to Date
July 29, 2005
To Whom It May Concern:
As you may know, the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, in this fourth year of its school lighting upgrade program, recently awarded 320 grants totaling more than $10 million to assist K-12 schools throughout our state to upgrade to high quality, energy efficient lighting systems.
With these grants, the Foundation has awarded more than $27 million to 800 public school districts and nonprofit schools through this program since 2002. This funding has enabled the installation of highly efficient lighting in nearly 1500 K-12 school buildings in 91 of Illinois' 102 counties. These lighting upgrades save energy, reduce operating costs and prevent pollution in our communities.
Having successfully reached so many schools with this program during the last four years and given the competing demands on the Foundation's resources, the Foundation announces two major changes to this program:
- The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation's K-12 School Lighting Upgrade Program will only run two more years, ending in 2007.
- Effective in 2006, school lighting upgrade grants will be calculated at up to $600 per kilowatt of electricity demand reduction that the upgrade yields. This is a $200 per kilowatt reduction in the funding formula used by the Foundation for this program since 2003. It is driven by a comparable drop in project costs: from 2003 to the present, the average cost of school lighting projects proposed to the Foundation has fallen by more than $340 per kilowatt.
We will send out detailed brochures and application forms for the 2006 K-12 School Lighting Upgrade Program this October, well in advance of the February 17, 2006 application deadline. In the meantime, if you have questions about the Foundation's lighting upgrade grant program, please contact Samantha Mattone on our staff at 312-372-5191 or via e-mail at SMattone@IllinoisQeanEnergy.org.
Thank you very much for your interest in the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.
