EPA Lamp Crushing Study FAQ
Prepared by Air Cycle Corporation1) What is this EPA Study all about?
In light of the growing popularity of equipment such as the Bulb Eater® in helping generators better manage fluorescent lamps, the EPA conducted a study to evaluate the performance of this type of equipment. Of particular focus was the efficacy of the technology relative to the designed purpose of controlling mercury emissions during the crushing process. Devices manufactured by 3 different companies completed the testing process, including our Bulb Eater®. Testing was conducted over a period of two years at different lamp recycling facilities across the country.
2) How did the Bulb Eater® perform in the study?
The Bulb Eater® performed very well. The study confirmed that when the Bulb Eater® is operated according to our proscribed operating procedures, the levels of mercury released into the air are below both the applicable OSHA time weighted exposure limit of 0.1 mg/m3, and even the recommended limit given by the American Conference of Industrial Hygiensts (ACGIH) who set their recommeneded maximum at 0.025 mg/m3 for mercury. Nevertheless, the report does emphasize the great importance of operating the Bulb Eater® in strict accord with proper operating procedures, highlighting some of the dangers that can occur if they are not followed. This is precisely why we developed an extremely detailed operator training video, which is available for free download from the media section of our website.
3) I already manage my lamps using a Bulb Eater®. Does this report mean I have to do anything differently?
No. The report was simply to gather information on the efficacy of the units' performance. It does not contain any new regulatory information or legal guidelines. You may continue managing your lamps as you have been doing.
4) I'm thinking of getting a Bulb Eater®, does this report mean that EPA says the Bulb Eater® is an acceptable management option for me?
The report doesn't advocate for, disapprove or approve, or pass judgment on equipment such as our Bulb Eater®. The basic purpose of the study was to examine how well the drum top crushing devices met the goal of containing mercury exposure. Whether or not the Bulb Eater® is an option for you is still determined by your respective lamp generation habits, and the laws of your state.
5) How can I get more information about this study?
